From Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi’s ‘Mercurio Geografico’, this 17th century map of Asia represents mountains, jungles and cities pictorially, with hand-coloured regional borders. The map’s cartouche is decorated with clothing and weaponry.

This mid-17th century map of the Philippines, Celebes (Sulawasi), Maluku Islands and New Guinea has some inaccuracies, particularly in the shape of Celebes and New Guinea. However, the many Philippine islands are portrayed relatively accurately.

Apart from some small islands, this mid-17th century Italian map of the Indian Ocean features no land other than the islands of Sumatra and Java in the top right corner. Text on the map refers to winds (‘Venti’) and currents (‘Corrente’).
