This early 18th century map of Southeast Asia includes a list detailing the location (latitude and longitude) of seven important cities in the region: Batavia, Achem, Camboya, Siam, Borneo, Macaçar and Manilla.

Notes on the back of this map describe the kingdoms of mainland Southeast Asia: religion (people are idolaters, a few Christians and Jews, many Muslims), royalty (kings are rich, people are unhappy) and geography (rivers render the lands fertile).

This map of Asia is dedicated to Prince William, Duke of Gloucester, and features a drawing of his coat of arms. He had been in line to succeed to the English throne, but died at the age of 11 in 1700, the year before this map was produced.

The regional borders of early 18th century Southeast Asia are shown on this map. Mountains are shown pictorially, and larger settlements are marked with a building symbol. Southern Borneo is labelled ‘Pays des Mahometans [Land of the Muslims]’.

Unusually, on this map of Asia, the place name Campa is used to label a large part of mainland Southeast Asia. In fact, Campa (more often Champa) was a smaller kingdom on the southeast coast of the mainland (part of modern Vietnam).
