Copy-specific Notes

Open note in new window Notes for Bodleian Library: (E) D40:6 (6) Note: Part of the exhibition "Volcanoes" (February - May 2017) - Note: Caption: Long before the spectacular 1883 eruption that made it famous, the Rakata cone formed a prominent peak on the island of Krakatoa (Crocatore) in the Straits of Sunda, between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. The island was known by sailors as ‘a very convenient waiting place ... with a town where fowls, goats and fruits might be procured’. The volcano had lain dormant since 1684, and didn’t reawaken until May 1883, when eruptions began from a crater at the northern end of the island. - Public note: Transferred from the School of Geography.
